Small guard  Big Impact

April 1, 2026

Chezareus aka “CJ” is a starting guard on the A team at his middle school this previous season

and even though he may be smaller in size, he makes up for it with speed, heart, and a real willingness to learn. Those qualities already give him a strong foundation, and they are the kind of traits that can take a player a long way when paired with the right development and consistency.

One of CJ’s biggest strengths right now is on the defensive side of the ball. He understands how to be disruptive, apply pressure, and make life difficult for whoever he is guarding. He takes pride in being a pest on defense, and that mindset is valuable. As he continues to grow, the next step will be developing more as a floor general by improving his playmaking, leadership with the ball, and ability to control the pace of the game.

Offensively, CJ already shows promise with a solid shooting form, which is a great sign for his long-term development. As he keeps working, the scoring production will come. On a personal note, it is always special to work with a young player who wants to one day attend Vanderbilt. Seeing CJ aim for my old stomping grounds makes it even more meaningful to be part of his journey. CJ’s path is just getting started, and if he keeps bringing the same hunger, discipline, and coachable spirit every day, there is no telling how far he can go. Keep working, keep learning, and keep believing—the future belongs to the ones who stay ready.
